Science in Action
Raul Gonzalez, PhD
Dr. Raul Gonzalez is Professor of Psychology, Psychiatry, and Immunology at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. He is director of the Substance Use and HIV Neuropsychology (SUHN) laboratory. His empirical research is focused on the interplay of neurocognitive functioning, drugs of abuse, and risky behaviors in individuals with or at risk for HIV.

Dr. Gonzalez’s current grant-funded research involved examination of the relationship between neurocognitive disinhibition with the presence and level of severity of cannabis use.

Clinical Case Series
Case studies provide distinctive information regarding the biological and psychological substrates of neuropsychological syndromes, information that may be obscured in the context of group investigations. A detailed and thoughtful discussion of the factors that influence diagnostic formulations and treatment plans can be instructive.
The case by Dr. Seth Margolis and Dr. Andrea Sartori highlights the complex nature of clinical enterprise. A young woman presents with a rare disorder, Moyamoya disease. Neurological aspects of the case are complicated by psychiatric issues, limitations in education and opioid abuse. Many patients present with a convergence of medical and psychosocial issues that seem impossible to disentangle.
Drs. Margolis and Sartori demonstrate a thoughtful and intelligent approach to assessment and feedback. Their formulation and treatment plan integrate current and premorbid medical and psychosocial factors. They underscore the need for treating each patient as a single case.

Video Interview Series
Robert Heaton, PhD
Over the past 50 years the INS leadership has included prominent neuroscientists from around the world who have made major contributions to our current understanding of how the brain works and who have shaped clinical practice in neurology, neuropsychology and speech pathology.
To acknowledge and preserve their contributions, the INS Education Task Force has developed the Video Archive Project where past INS Presidents. Interviewees are asked to provide a historical perspective on their career development including specific areas of research.

Neuropsychology in India: A Student Perspective:
Neuropsychology in India has been evolving for about 42 years with its history dating back to 1975 when it officially started as a specialization at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences. Currently, clinical neuropsychology is practiced in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gandhinagar, Kolkata, Mysore, and Hyderabad. Neurologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, and gerontologists commonly refer patients for cognitive assessments and to rule out differential diagnoses.

The SLC is currently seeking applications for student representatives from outside of North America. Applications are open to all Student/Associate Members of the INS receiving training in a country outside of North America. Students early in their training (e.g., 1st/2nd year graduate students) are strongly encouraged to apply.

2018 North American Meeting
The 51st anniversary of the International Neuropsychological Society (INS) marks an exciting and new chapter for the organization to examine the status quo of clinical neuropsychology advocacy, education, practice, and research, and begin to lay the foundation for moving toward the next century. These ideas and location have all inspired the theme for the 2018 INS meeting, which is announced as:

2018 Mid-Year Meeting
Save the date! 2018 will come faster than you realize, so be on the lookout for announcements regarding abstract admissions for the upcoming INS 2018 Mid-Year Meeting, to be hosted in the beautiful and historical city of Prague. Meeting abstracts will be due in October 2017.

New Director of CE at INS
Melissa Lamar, PhD
Dr. Melissa Lamar has been appointed by the INS Board of Governors as the incoming Director of Continuing Education for the INS. We extend a warm congratulations to her!
Dr. Lamar is currently an Associate Professor at the Rush University Medical Center Alzheimer’s Disease Center and the Department of Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Lamar has worked internationally and made significant contributions to neuropsychology through her teaching, clinical work, and research in the areas of cognitive aging. She has published extensively, received several NIH grants, trained numerous students, provided significant service to the field of neuropsychology, and is an active member of INS.
Dr. Lamar’s experience and her passion for neuropsychology will be an asset to INS. She will be taking over the role of CE Director from Dr. Raul Gonzalez at the 2018 Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Welcome to the team, Dr. Lamar!
2018 Election Slate & Call for Write-In Candidates
The INS has announced the 2018 Election Slate! Members are also invited to nominate additional write-in candidates for the 2018 election. Write-in candidates who receive at least 40 nominations and who give their consent will be added to the ballot. All write-in nominations must be received by August 31, 2017.

New INS Tiered Dues Structure
In recognition of the multinational membership of INS, the Board of Governors approved a new tiered dues structure for 2018 based on the World Bank classification of Country Income Groups.
This structure will better take into account the income diversity among INS members, and encourage membership and involvement in emerging areas of the world. For more information, click

Call for Papers for JINS Special Issue
Investigators are invited to submit empirical papers for a special issue of JINS on the Neuropsychology of Neurodevelopmental Disorders.
The issue will present innovative empirical findings related to the neuropsychology of specific neurodevelopmental disorders, with emphasis on congenital conditions, as well as systematic reviews and meta-analyses focused on identification of biomarkers and their relevance to behavioral and medical intervention.

International Epilepsy Training Course
The International League Against Epilepsy would like to announce the 2nd International Training Course on Neuropsychology in Epilepsy.
The course is designed for neuropsychologists and other epilepsy clinicians to advance their knowledge of neuropsychological approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of people with epilepsy.
This year’s ILAE course will be held in Provence, France in April 2018, led by Sarah Wilson (Melbourne) and Sallie Baxendale (London).

The many faces of academic success.
Participants take part in a hypothetical appointment procedure for a tenured professorship and state their preferences for different candidates. Participation will take approximately 15-20 minutes.
